Google Maps for Android Gets Useful Navigation Updates

Thursday, September 9th, 2010
Today, Google introduced Walking Navigation for Google Maps for mobile 4.5 on Android. This is described as a marriage between the existing Navigation and walking directions features. Users can also now use Street View smart navigation or the new Google Maps search bar.

"Walking Navigation lets you use GPS navigation with walking directions that are more direct and use pedestrian pathways when we know about them," explain Google software engineers Andrey Ulanov and Kevin Law.  "To try it now, choose the ‘Walking’ option from the Navigation icon. Walking Navigation has a few changes that help when you’re on your feet. For example, your phone will vibrate when you need to make a turn. You can even turn off voice guidance and just use these notifications while soaking in the sights and sounds around you. To help you orient yourself with your surroundings, the map will rotate with you as you turn the phone, and walking mode uses satellite view by default. Use it like a virtual compass with satellite imagery to look ahead or help pick out landmarks along the way."

Walking Navigation is in beta, and may not always have the bet information.

"If you want a sneak preview of where you’re going, use the new Street View on Google Maps with smart navigation and updated imagery," says Law. "Just like with Street View smart navigation on your computer, you no longer have to slowly move down a street by tapping arrows along roads repeatedly. Now you can quickly navigate Street View by dragging Pegman from the corner and highlighting where you want to go with a lightly shaded “pancake” on roads or a rectangle on buildings. Let go of the screen when highlighting the front of a building, and you’ll fly there and turn to face it. With a swipe of your finger, you can hop rivers and scale buildings."

This requires an update to the Street View on Google Maps Android app.

The new Google Maps Search bar appears at the top of the map, and lets you quickly search, open Google Places, use the layers menu, or find your location. You can also filter search results by distance or ratings, view prices, and see cross streets for places.

Google Adds Analytics Support to Chrome Extensions

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

If you have a Google Chrome extension, this news might interest you greatly. Google announced today that it has added support for Google Analytics to the Chrome Extension Gallery

The move, Google says, will "help you better understand how many people visit your extension pages, where they’re coming from and more."

Users can specify a Google Analytics profile for each extension. This will start tracking the extension’s page in GA like it was its own site.

Google Analytics support from Chrome extensions

"You can also use Google Analytics to track the usage of your extension once it’s installed," says Google software engineer Qian Huang. "Check out this tutorial that explains how to integrate Google Analytics such that you can analyze how users interact with the features of your extensions."

Browser extensions can be a good way to keep customers engaged with your business, and being able to track that will no doubt help tremendously.

Nearly one-third (31.5%) of sports fans cite the Internet or TV programming (30.4%) as the best resource for sports-related news and information according to a new survey from Burst Media.

Burst-Media

Overall, either national television programming or the Internet are most often cited by sports fans – 30.8% and 25.7%, respectively – as their primary source of sports news and information. Male sports fans are significantly more likely than female sports fans (32.1% vs. 16.4%) to cite Internet content as their primary sports information source. National television sports programming is more popular with female sports fans: one-third (34.8%) cite it as their primary sports information source.

Sports fans use the Internet to check scores and stats (59.2%); read sports-related news stories and commentary (47.4%); and watch sports-related videos and clips (35.6%). The bulk (31.3%) of respondents cites between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. as when they are most likely to visit sports-related sites and resources on the Internet.

Social platforms such as Facebook or Twitter can help brands be more effective with endorsement programs: overall, one-quarter (24.7%) of sports fans currently or have at one time or another followed their favorite athletes in social media. Among 18-24 year-old sports fans, 36.5% turn to social media. One-third (33.0%) of 25-34 year-olds follow their favorite sports stars, as does one-quarter (27.4%) of 35-44 year-olds.

Among all sports fans, 32.1% identify themselves as “avid” fans who “try to stay updated as much as possible” on sports scores and news, and 67.9% are “casual" fans who say they “follow sports from time to time.” In the avid sports fans segment, two-thirds (67.9%) are between the ages of 25-54, with nearly half (46.3%) being 35-54 years old. More than half (55.1%) of avid fans have graduated from college and one-quarter (27.3%) report a household income of $75,000 or more.

“Brands of all kinds have a significant opportunity to reach and engage a loyal and savvy audience in online sports content,” said Mark Kaefer, Director of Marketing at Burst Media.

“By rounding out broadcast and print media campaigns with an online component, advertisers can reach a targeted audience of educated and affluent consumers.”
